Federal Member for Dunkley, Chris Crewther MP, today welcomed the activation of disaster assistance in response to storms and floods that have been affecting Victorian communities.

Mr Crewther said the funding announced today would assist the Frankston City Council in ensuring it has the resources and support needed to recover from the storm’s devastating impacts.

Frankston SES received more than 200 calls throughout last week’s storms, with 35 volunteers responding around the clock – Seaford and Carrum Downs were the worst hit.

As well as funding for local councils, relief payments are also available to eligible individuals affected – particularly by the floods.

Mr Crewther said assistance has been made available under the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), and includes:

  • Personal hardship and distress assistance to meet emergency needs.
  • Personal and financial counselling for those suffering personal hardship and distress.
  • Removal of debris from residential properties to make them safe and habitable.
  • Counter disaster operations assistance to help local councils with the costs of protecting their communities and clean-up activities; and
  • Restoration of essential public assets to restore essential infrastructure, such as local roads that were damaged by the floods.

“The Australian Government stands ready to assist affected Victorian communities to get back on their feet, and I am pleased to see this funding announced today,” Mr Crewther said. Information regarding disaster assistance available and eligibility can be found on the Victorian Emergency website at www.emergency.vic.gov.au/relief  or the Australian Government’s Disaster Assist website at www.disasterassist.gov.au
